SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team fell to No. 15 Sonoma State in the season opener Friday afternoon, 8-7, at the Otter Baseball Field.

The Otters started it off strong, behind the reins of senior starter Patrick McClain, with six strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings pitched.

At the bottom of the third, freshmen #Jeff Owen# and #Nolan Murray# strung together hits to start up the inning. The Otters got on the board first when Owen scored on a balk.

The Seawolves answered back in the bottom of the fourth with Wells hitting a lead-off home run over the center field wall tying it up 1-1.

Redshirt-junior #Pete Estes# drew a walk to start things off at the top of the inning.  Freshmen #Tyler Young# capitalized on a pitching change for the Seawolves with a double to the right center gap, scoring Estes. Owen singled and advanced on the throw to second, while Young made it 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, redshirt-sophomore #Chris Lopiccolo# hit a single to left field, setting the table for senior #Brent Sargenti#'s two-run home run down the left field line.

The Otters added another run in the seventh off of Young's single to right center.

The Seawolves went on top for the final time, adding three runs in the eighth inning.

Eight starters recorded a hit a piece. Young and Owen each recorded two hits.

In the night cap, the Seawolves jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the first half inning.  CSUMB tried to fight back after the harsh first inning, but never recovered.

Smeds and Friedman both recorded two hits, as the Otters fell to Sonoma State 16-5.

The two teams will meet once again in the non-conference double header on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Otter Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 11am.
