SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision in the first game of a doubleheader to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon. The second game will continue Sunday, Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. due to foggy conditions; the score is tied 4-4 in the top of the eighth.
In the opener, the Coyotes got on the board early in the second with two walks and two singles to combine for two runs.
CSUSB matched the second inning by pushing across two runs, making the score 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, senior center fielder #Brent Sargenti# gave the Otters a reason to jump out of their seats, hitting his second home run of the season over the left field fence. Senior #Jacob Flores# drew four straight pitches for the walk. Freshmen catcher #Tyler Young# singled to right field, with aggressive base running Flores advanced to third. Flores scored on a throwing error by the pitcher to make the score 4-2.
The Coyotes added another run in the eighth to make the final score, 5-2.
CSUSB, once again, got the first lead of the nightcap, off the bat of freshmen Ethan Chapman with a home run over the right field fence.
The Otters took the lead away shortly after. The inning started off with freshmen #Kyle Espinola# reaching first. Junior #Pete Estes# singled up the middle, advancing Espinola to second. Freshmen #Alex Mangubat# walked, loading the bases. Sargenti singled to left field scoring both, Espinola and Estes. Freshmen second basemen #Nolan Murray# walked, pushing the runners each 90 feet closer to home plate. Young singled to center field, pushing across two runs, making the score 4-1.
The Coyotes added two runs in the fifth to inch closer to the Otters.
CSUSB tied the game up in the top of the seventh inning on a blooper by designated hitter Bryant Viega to right center that was lost in the fog.
With one out on the board, Mangubat struck a hard hit ball to right center, hitting his first triple of the season. After a brief fog delay in the middle of the seventh, Sargenti and Murray were granted first by intentional walks, to load the bases. Young grounded into a double play to end the inning for the Otters.
CSUMB has nine hits going into tomorrow's game wrap-up, while the Coyotes have seven.
The game will continue at 11 AM at the Otter Baseball Field, followed by the 9-inning game to wrap up the series.
