LOS ANGELES
– For a third time this year, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw a conference game slip through its fingers, falling to Cal State L.A. 60-58, on Friday night.

“We really battled tonight and put ourselves in a position to win,” said head coach #Rob Bishop#. “Just couldn't hit a couple of shots late.”

Freshman #Davion Berry# shot 55.6 from the field, scoring a team-high 13 points and senior #Sean Jergo# added 10 points.  Senior #Keith Wilson# also recorded 10 points along with his team-high six rebounds and three steals.

With five seconds on the clock and down by four, Berry connected on a 3-pointer to close the game to 58-57 CSULA. An Otter foul set up CSULA's Dwayne Jones to hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left to make it 60-57.

Jones, though, fouled senior guard #Shaun Williams# as he was attempting a potential game-tying 3-pointer with one-tenth of a second remaining. Williams hit the first free throws and, after a CSULA timeout, missed the second. Williams then double-clutched before his third attempt, drawing players from both teams into the lane, resulting in a double lane violation. The possession arrow favored the Golden Eagles, who got the ball inbounds and ended the game.

CSULA had a 38-27 advantage over the Otters. The shooting percentage from the field was similar with the Golden Eagles edging out the Otters, 41.1 percent to 40.8 percent.

The Golden Eagles scored 16 of their 60 points off CSUMB turnovers.

Chris Fields led the Golden Eagles with 17 points and six rebounds, while Mark Dorsey added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Carl Hoffman had 10 points and four rebounds.

“I was proud of how we defended CSULA tonight,” Bishop said. “Now we have to get ready for Cal State Dominguez Hills tomorrow.”

CSUMB takes on the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
