SEASIDE, Calif. – Senior #Shaun Williams# led four players scoring in double figures to help Cal State Monterey Bay cruise past Sonoma State, 80-63, in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Sunday night.
“That was a big win for us and we needed it," said head coach #Rob Bishop#. "We played hard for 40 minutes and were able to play through a slow start offensively and gradually build some momentum."
The Otters (4-6, 2-3 CCAA) record their second conference victory while Sonoma State (3-8, 2-4 CCAA) picked up its fourth loss.
Senior #Sean Jergo# posted season-highs as he notched his first double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman #Davion Berry# finished with 14 points and senior #Keith Wilson# added 10 points. Berry dished out five assists and senior #Kris Jones# nabbed four steals.
CSUMB jumped out to a 10-4 lead but senior Steven Pratt's bucket and 3-pointer closed the gap to 10-9. After the Seawolves tied the game at 12-12, CSUMB went on its own run by taking a 22-12 advantage.
The Otters sailed to a 33-22 lead at halftime after shooting 11-for-13 at the free throw line.
CSUMB dominated in the second half by shooting 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the field. The Otters out-rebounded SSU, 46 to 27.
"Our defensive effort tonight was tremendous," Bishop said. "I was very proud of our guys."
Sonoma State was led by Sterling Arterberry with 15 points while Steven Pratt and Will Olsem each added 14 points. Olsem pulled down a team-high eight boards.
CSUMB kicks-off a four-game road trip on Friday, Jan. 8 against Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
