CHICO, Calif.
– In the Chico State's Wildcat Invitational, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker against Academy of Art University in its season opener despite outshooting the Urban Knights 18-9.

AAU (1-1) got on the board early by scoring in the 11th minute on a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

The Otters evened the match at 1-1 on senior #Mario Khoury#'s goal from 15 yards out.  Senior #Nate Torricelli# and freshman #Max Brixey# were awarded the assists.

The Urban Knights would score two more goals before the end of the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break.

CSUMB came out strong in the second half, outshooting AAU 13-4, but was only able to notch one more goal in regulation. Junior #Andrew Breault#'s first goal of the season came on a pass by freshman #Kyle Castaneda# in the 87th minute.

Senior goalkeeper #Brenden Baca# recorded four saves.

“Difficult heat made the pressure we put them under encouraging,” said head coach Artie Cairel.

The Otters return to the field on Monday, Aug. 31, in their final game of the Wildcat Invitational. CSUMB takes on Saint Martin's University at 11 a.m.
