SEATTLE –
Taking on the 2008 NCAA National Champions in the season opener, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team held their own with a final score of 1-0 against Seattle Pacific University at Interbay Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 28.

"The women almost played a perfect game," said head coach Artie Cariel. "They had three chances in the last two minutes and had Seattle Pacific scrambling."

The Otters held the Falcons scoreless until the 65th minute when Jocelyn Charette won the ball in a goalmouth scramble and poked it past freshman goalkeeper #Andrea Davis#.

Davis and the CSUMB's defense saw a lot of action as SPU took 23 shots in the game.  Davis racked up 10 saves in her first collegiate game.

Seniors #Alyssa Matheson#, #Sarah Alderson# and #Kyla Flores# each recorded a shot for the Otters.

"They took the No. 1 team in the country head on and showed they will need to be reckoned with if they continue to believe in each other," Cairel said. "Proud day for the Otter women."

The Otters continue their Washington road trip on Saturday, taking on Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Wash. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
