Otters Take Series Opener Against Chico State

SEASIDE, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team recorded an 8-4 victory over Chico State in the rain delayed first game that began on Friday, preventing Chico State from qualifying to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament.

The Otters dropped the two games that were originally scheduled for today, 19-3 and 5-4.

On Friday, the Wildcats scored on a pass ball in their first at bat to take a 1-0 lead. Senior #Matt DeJesus#'s ground out in the bottom of the first inning drove in senior #Shea Davis# to tie the game at 1-1.

Senior #Steve Mays# hit a RBI single to second base to score senior #Andrew Marquardt# who reached on a single through the left side, taking a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, it was Marquardt's turn to hit a RBI single, giving the Otters a 3-1 lead.

DeJesus led off the fifth inning with a triple off the center field wall and then scored on a wild pitch to raise CSUMB's lead to 4-1.

After the completion of the top of the sixth inning, the umpires stopped the game due to rain.  The game resumed on Saturday

The game was postponed in the middle of the sixth inning until Saturday due to rain.

When play resumed Saturday morning, the Wildcats added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and closed the gap to 4-2.

Chico State tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on a single and a CSUMB error.

CSUMB retook the lead in their frame of the eighth.  Marquardt and junior #Jacob Flores# hit back-to-back singles to left field. DeJesus hit a RBI single to the gap in right center and Mays followed with a 2 RBI double down the left field line.  The Otters final run came on a ground out by junior #Jason Okamoto#.

CSUMB's starter #Norman Hebert# got a no decision after pitching seven innings, allowing four runs with three of them earned.  Senior #Brian Callen# recorded the victory in two innings of relief, striking out two batters.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Mays and Marquardt each recorded two hits for the Otters.

The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in second inning of the nightcap on three hits and a CSUMB error. 

The Otters responded in their bottom of the frame with two runs.  Okamoto doubled to center field to bring senior #Cody Guarnera# across the plate.  Senior #Michael Trump# hit a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 3-2.

Chico State added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly to center field, 4-2.

The Otters once again made it a one run game in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Okamoto, but Chico State responded with another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly after #Kyle Eveland# doubled to lead off the inning.

CSUMB's final run came in the top of the sixth when DeJesus led off with a single, stole both second and third base, and then scored on an error by Chico State's catcher.

In the three games, Marquardt led the Otters at the plate with six hits.  DeJesus, Mays and junior #Ryan Chagonjian# each added four hits.

The Otters close out their 2009 season against Chico State on Sunday, May 3 with the first pitch scheduled at noon.  Before the game, CSUMB will honor its 11 seniors; #Norman Hebert#, #Andrew Marquardt#, #Shea Davis#, #Daniel Barras#, #Michael Trump#, #Daniel Bifano#, #Steve Mays#, #Matt DeJesus#, #Thomas Incaviglia#, #Cody Guarnera# and #Brian Callen#.
