Otters Fall In First Extra-Inning Game Of 2009 Season

Andrew Marquardt leads Otters with five RBI performance

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Playing in wind gusts up to 30 MPH, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team fell 16-9 in a 10-inning game to Cal State L.A. on Friday at the Otter Baseball Field.

Down 8-4 after the seventh inning stretch, senior #Andrew Marquardt# crushed a two-run homer over the center field wall. 

The Otters added two more runs to tie the game, 8-8, in the bottom of the eighth.  Senior #Daniel Barras#, pinch running for freshman #Niko Kanakaris# who reached on an error, scored on a wild pitch.  Junior #Brent Sargenti# doubled to left field and Marquardt's double to the opposite corner brought Sargenti across the plate.

The Golden Eagles led off the ninth inning with a home run by Travis Tartamella to take a 9-8 lead.

CSUMB countered in the ninth when senior #Shea Davis# drew a walk and moved to third on a single by junior #Jacob Flores#. Barras hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to tie the game, 9-9.

CSULA scored seven runs on four hits including two home runs in the top of the 10th to take the victory.

Marquardt was 3-for-5 on the day with five RBI and one run scored.  Davis was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs.  Flores went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

CSUMB starter #Patrick McClain# got no decision in the game tossing six innings. He gave up seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits.  The loss went to closer #Thadd McAlpin# after pitching 1.2 innings and giving up seven runs on four hits.

The CSUMB-CSULA series continues on Saturday, April 4, with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at the Otter Baseball Field.
