Otters Attempt Seventh Inning Rally

CARSON, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped the middle two games of its weekend California Collegiate Athletic Association series with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at Toro Field.

The Toros took the opener, 11-2 and got the nightcap of the twin bill, 7-5.

In game one, CSUMB's eight hits were spread out evenly throughout the Otter lineup with no one getting more than one hit.

The Otters two runs came in the seventh and ninth innings.  Senior #Steve Mays# led off the seventh inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on throw. Senior #Matt DeJesus# recorded the RBI by grounding out to first base.

With one out in the ninth inning, DeJesus doubled to right center and scored on a single by junior Brent Sargenti.

Both starting pitchers earned the decisions with CSUDH's Kody Kurowski recording the win and Norman Hebert taking the loss.

The Toros held a 7-0 lead into the sixth inning when the Otters scored two runs off two hits. Leadoff batter #Jacob Flores# struck out but reached on CSUDH error.  Mays singled up the middle and Flores advanced to second.  With two outs, junior #Robert Mendoza# drew a walk to load the bases.  Junior #Jason Okamoto# hit a 2 RBI single up the middle.

CSUMB rallied in the seventh, beginning with senior #Andrew Marquardt# leading off with a double to right field. DeJesus singled up the middle to bring Marquardt across the plate.  Flores singled down the right field line and Mays flied out to right field to put runners at the corners. DeJesus scored on a pass ball to close the gap to 7-4.  Sargenti reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Flores for CSUMB's final run, 7-5.

Senior #Thomas Incaviglia# (2-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings and striking out six batters.  

The Otters (10-38, 5-26 CCAA) close out the four-game series against CSUDH on Sunday, April 26 at 12 p.m.
