FIRST PITCH:
The Otters head south for their final road trip of the season, taking on the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

NEXT WEEK:

CSUMB closes its 2009 season, hosting the Wildcats of Chico State in a four-game series at the Otter Baseball Field.

SCOUTING THE TOROS:
Cal State Dominguez Hills (27-18, 16-12) is 4th in the CCAA standings and is 20-4 at home this year.  The Toros split a four-game series with No. 6 UC San Diego last weekend, taking the final two games, 8-5 and 5-1.

THREE CCAA TEAMS IN NATIONAL STANDINGS:
In the new Collegiate Baseball Division II rankings that were released on April 20, three CCAA teams are featured.  UC San Diego leads the group with a No. 6 ranking after posting a 27-10 record.  Sonoma State, who is third in the CCAA standings, is ranked 10th this week.  Cal State L.A. is staying steady at 22nd for the second week in a row.  Sophomore Carlos Leyva is nationally-ranked 16th in stolen bases (25) and 21st in runs (57).  Senior Jon Alia is ranked in the Top 50 in five categories: 5th in slugging percentage (.883), 17th in batting average (.457), 11th in doubles (20), 11th in home runs (15) and 12th in RBI (64).

SAN FRANCISCO STATE FINAL GAME:
The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team recorded a 13-7 series finale victory over San Francisco State on Sunday, April 19, at the Otter Baseball Field. Junior #Ryan Chagonjian#'s run gave the Otters a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Chagonjian led off with a single and then scored on a ground out by junior #Robert Mendoza#. The Gators took the lead on Sean Proni's 2 RBI double in the third inning. The Otters rallied back in their half of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits.  Senior #Andrew Marquardt# drew a walk to lead off the inning.  Senior #Matt DeJesus# singled to third base and junior #Jacob Flores# followed with a RBI single up the middle. Chagonjian drew a walk to load the bases.  Junior #Brent Sargenti# hit a sacrifice fly to score DeJesus.  Senior #Steve Mays# connected on a 2 RBI single to end CSUMB's scoring of the inning. CSUMB added another run in the fourth and fifth innings on single by Flores and Marquardt's triple to right center. SFSU closed the gap to 7-5, putting up three runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Greg Kline's 2 RBI double. Mays's single in the sixth inning gave the Otters two more runs, giving them a 9-5 advantage. CSUMB notched three more runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth to take a 13-5 lead. The Gators attempted a rally in their last at bat by scoring two runs, but CSUMB relief pitcher #Brian Callen# forced Nick Nyman to fly out to end the game. DeJesus went 4-for-6 on the day, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. Senior #Thomas Incaviglia# earned his second win of the season after pitching six innings and allowed only four hits.

DEJESUS TAKES OTTER RECORD:
Senior #Matt DeJesus# is currently on a 17-game hitting streak that began on March 14 when the Otters defeated Sonoma State, 6-3, for the first time in school history. DeJesus's single in the fifth inning scored two insurance runs for CSUMB. During this streak, DeJesus has racked up 21 RBI, 33 hits, four doubles, five home runs.

OTTERS BREAK INTO NATIONAL STATISTICS:

The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team is ranked in the top 100 in six categories: 18th in double plays (40), 52nd in doubles (89), 54th in sacrifice flies (20), 67th in hit by pitches (47), 93rd in fielding percentage (.955) and 99th in hits (399).

OTTERS LEAD CHARGE IN CLEAN-UP DAY:

More than 100 student athletes participated in the 2nd Annual Campus Clean-Up Day on Saturday to kick-off Earth Week. James Main, California State University, Monterey Bay Vice President for Administration and Finance, assisted in organizing the today's event. “Much appreciation to all the student-athletes for their participation,” Main said. “It was great to watch them have fun will doing a good deed for their university in addition to everything else they give.” Members of the men's and women's soccer team, men's basketball team, women's water polo team, baseball team and sailing team came out to pick up liter throughout the CSUMB campus.  “Today's campus clean-up efforts by CSUMB student-athletes, coaches and staff is another example of how proud we all are of our university and campus,” said Athletic Director Vince Otoupal. “The effort today by the athletic department is something we are proud of.” “We put forth a championship effort around the clean-up just like we do with our families, in the classroom and when we compete for CSUMB,” Otoupal said. “The campus is cleaner because of our efforts.” Afterwards, the volunteers were invited to a free barbecue, catered by Sodexo, in the main quad.
