Grand Slam Lifts Otters To 14-9 Victory Over Academy of Art

CSUMB scores season-high eight runs in the fifth inning

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Senior #Steve Mays# hit a grand slam on Tuesday as the Otter baseball team defeated Academy of Art, 14-9, in a non-conference game. 

Cal State Monterey Bay took the early when sophomore #Andrew DeGarmo# crossed the plate on a single by senior #Matt DeJesus#.  Senior #Shea Davis# hit a sacrifice fly to score #Andrew Marquardt# who reached on an error, giving the Otters a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

The Urban Knights scored a single run in the second inning followed by two runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead.  They would go on to add another run when Chris Vargas hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning.

The Otters would take back the lead in the bottom of the frame. Cody Guarnera blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall. Junior #Brent Sargenti# then hit a sacrifice fly to score junior #Jacob Flores# who reached on a single.

CSUMB's bats got hot in the fifth inning by putting a season-high eight runs on the board on six hits. After Marquardt led off with a walk, DeJesus hit an RBI double to center field.  The Otters added a run while loading the bases after a Davis reached on walk, senior #Cody Guarnera# was hit by a pitch and Flores singled to third base to score DeJesus.  On a 0-1 count, Mays hit his first collegiate grand slam over the center field wall.  Junior #Joey Friedman# singled and advanced to second on a balk. He would then move to third after tagging on Sargenti's fly out to center field and score on a wild pitch.  After singling to right center, junior #Jason Okamoto# scored on a groundout by DeJesus to finish CSUMB's scoring in the inning.

The Otters added one more run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Friedman to bring Flores across the plate.

The Urban Knights attempted a rally in the ninth inning by putting up five runs on the board.  Sophomore #Ron Duer# came into the game in relief to get the final two outs to secure the victory.

CSUMB went through eight pitchers, with no one pitching more than two innings. DeJesus finished with a team-high three hits with two doubles. Okamoto, Flores and Mays each added two hits for the Otters.

The Otters (8-28) return to the field on Friday, April 3, for a four-game series against No. 15 Cal State L.A. at the Otter Baseball Field. First pitch is 3 p.m.
