Game Notes

FIRST PITCH:
After winning their first season opener in program history on Monday, the Otters are ready to hit the road to take on Sonoma State this weekend.  This is a non-conference four-game series.

NEXT WEEK:
The Otters host eight games next week, beginning with a three-game series against Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, Feb. 10. CSUMB plays Sonoma State in a single game followed by a four-game series against NAIA Oregon Tech over the weekend.

SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES:
The defending west region champion Sonoma State baseball team was slotted third in the CCAA pre-season coaches' poll. Sonoma State has won the last two CCAA titles and has won the championship five times in ten years of conference membership. The Seawolves are coming off the best season in school history, when they went 52-15 on their way to CCAA and west region titles.  Sonoma finished third at the NCAA Division II Championship in Sauget, Illinois.  The Seawolves will welcome back CCAA Player of the Year Ian Bridges, CCAA Newcomer of the Year Kris Haycock, and Second Team All-CCAA pick Mark Pestorich and among others to the lineup in 2009.  Gary Moran, a CCAA Honorable Mention pick after going 8-3 last season, heads up the pitching staff.

CAL STATE EAST BAY:
Senior #Matt DeJesus# broke a 1-1 game with a double to center field scoring Jason Okamoto as Cal State Monterey Bay walked off with a 2-1 victory over Cal State East Bay in the 2009 opening game at Otters Baseball Field on Monday. Freshman #Austin Thiel# pitched six scoreless innings, striking out three, in his first collegiate appearance. Freshman closer #Brock Meastas# racked up the win. In the fourth inning, junior Brent Sargenti got things started by being struck by a pitch.  He advanced to third on a single to the right-side by Andrew Marquardt and scored on a sacrifice fly by DeJesus. CSUEB's Brian Lloyd hit a double down the left line to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning.

ALUMNI GAME:
The 2009 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team rolled to a 12-4 victory over a group of former CSUMB players in the 1st Annual Alumni Game.  #Shea Davis# (3-5, 3B, 2B, RBI) led the Otters attack with three hits. #Jason Okamoto# (2-2), Jace Fanner (2-2, RBI), #Peter Estes# (2-2, RBI) and #Joey Friedman# (2-2, RBI) had two hits each for CSUMB.  The Alumni jumped out to a 3-0 lead off three unearned runs in the second inning. Davis opened up the third inning on a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by #Brent Sargenti#.  The Otters took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs and added another in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Ben Hartshorn hit the lone home run of the game in the fifth to finish off the Alumni's scoring. The Otters put up five runs in the final three innings. The day started off with the Home Run Derby. 2007 graduate Benjamin Mayberry beat out classmate Budd Glock to take the Derby Title.
