OPENING TIP:
First game is scheduled against the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State Friday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and the Seawolves of Sonoma State on Saturday, Feb. 7 also at 5:30 p.m.
LOOKING AHEAD:
After two consecutive weeks on the road, the Otters are home for two weekends. CSUMB hosts next Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Feb. 13 and Cal State L.A the following night at the Otters Sports Center.
SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS:
Humboldt State (13-6, 8-4 CCAA) is currently ranked 21st in the nation in scoring, averaging 77 ppg and has three players holding national rankings in the scoring arena. The Lumberjacks lead CSUMB in the all-times series record following a 90-70 win in Arcata earlier this season. HSU defeated SSU on Jan. 28 60-56 but could not survive in overtime as they suffered a 86-84 loss to No. 21 UC San Diego, Jan 31. Players to watch: Katie Franci (14.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg), Brittney Taylor (14.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 33 blocks), Paige Peterson (9.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 75 assists).
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES:
Sonoma State (8-11, 4-8 CCAA) is on a three game losing streak. Their last game against UC San Diego resulted in an upsetting overtime lose (69-78). Players to watch: Lauren Redfield (9.8 ppg, 40 assists, 19 steals), Olivia Larkin (9.5 ppg, 74.5 free throw percentage).
OTTERS BREAK INTO NATIONAL STATISTICS:
CSUMB finds itself ranked 99th in the nation in free throw percentage (71.3). Individually, junior #Helen Suarez# is in the national top 100 of two categories: points per game (16.4, 82nd) and assists per game (4.8, 42nd). Senior #Dana Andrews# is ranked 74th after averaging 16.5 points per game.
AGAINST CAL STATE STANISLAUS:
Junior #Helen Suarez# scored 21 points as the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team fell 73-57 to Cal State Stanislaus Friday at Warrior Arena. Senior #Dana Andrews# recorded a team-high seven rebounds on top of her 12 points. The Otters shot an improved 48.4 percent from the field in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors shot 56.5 percent.
AGAINST CHICO STATE:
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team fell, 63-43, to Chico State on Saturday at Acker Gym. Senior #Dana Andrews# led the Otters with 18 points. Juniors #Helen Suarez# and #Denelle Baker# added six points apiece. Junior #Janet Oseguera# pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
RECORD WATCH:
Senior #Dana Andrews# added another milestone to her numerous achievements at CSUMB, breaking the career record for steals. She has collected 118 career steals, passing former teammate
Alma Lopez on Jan 30, against Cal State Stainislaus. Andrews achieved the 1,000 point milestone on Nov. 15 against University of Mary.
SUAREZ SMOOTH IN CCAA:
Junior #Helen Suarez# went on a four-game streak of scoring 20-plus points, raising her total to eight games this season. Suarez has also elevated to the top of the scoring charts against CCAA opponents, averaging 18.0 ppg, which lands her 1st in the conference rankings. Also in those rankings, Suarez is in 2nd place in steals (2.5), 3rd in assists per game (3.7) and 9th in free throw percentage (69.9).
MAKING HISTORY:
The Otters have surpassed the most wins in a single season with their current overall record of 9-5. CSUMB tallied a total of seven wins back in the 2006-07 season.
