SEASIDE, Calif. – Playing in steady rain, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Oregon Tech on Sunday at the Otters Baseball Field. The Hustlin' Owls took the opener, 5-3, and the nightcap, 11-6.
Senior #Steve Mays# went 2-for-4 in the opener and nabbed a single in the second game to continue his 10-game hitting streak. Junior #Ryan Chagonjian# went 2-for-3 in the second game.
In the opener, the Otters tied the game at three in the bottom of the second. Junior #Peter Estes# reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, senior #Shane Davis# drew a walk and senior #Dan Barras# singled through the left side to load the bases. Davis and Estes scored on an OIT error. Mays hit a RBI double to score Barras.
OIT took the lead in the fifth inning on a home run by leadoff batter Ryson Mauricio. The Owls added an insurance run in the seventh on a home run by Zach Earle.
In game two, the Otters came back and tied the score three times. The Owls posted three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take an 11-5 lead. CSUMB attempted a rally in the sixth when Barras hit a double to right field to score senior #Andrew DeGarmo#.
The Otters (3-10) host No. 2 UC San Diego next weekend for a four-game series to begin their California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule. First game is on Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. start time and a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
