Rohnert Park, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team remains undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference play, pulling off a 65-61 victory over Sonoma State University on Friday, Jan 2 at the Seawolf Gym.
With the win, CSUMB improves to 9-1 on the season.
The Otters held the lead for most of the first half, taking a 36-32 advantage at the break.
Sonoma State took their largest lead of the game, 58-53, on a three-pointer by Steven Pratt. CSUMB answered with a 12-3 run in the last seven minutes of play to clinch the victory.
“It was a big win for us to start off a long road swing,” said Otter head coach Rob Bishop. “We were not flashy tonight but we got stops when we needed to and made free throws when it counted.”
“#Steve Monreal# and #Joe Mitchell# both played well tonight.”
Monreal led the Otters with 20 points, his fourth 20-plus game, and five assists. Mitchell registered a season-high 18 points and senior #Jose Sanchez# added 10 points.
Sonoma State's bench scored 42 points with James Sandoval leading the way with 17 points.
“Now we have another tough task ahead of us tomorrow night at Humboldt State,” Bishop said.
The Otters travel farther north to Arcata, California where the squad will take on the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State University at the Lumberjack Arena. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
