CARSON, Calif. – Senior #Joe Mitchell# led four players in double-figures with 14 points, as the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 76-72, on Saturday, at the Torodome.
With the win, CSUMB improves to 10-3, and 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference play. CSUDH's record drops to 10-3 overall (4-2 CCAA).
Joining Mitchell in double-figures for CSUMB were junior #Shaun Williams# (11 points), senior #Steve Monreal# (10 points) and junior #Trevor Ray# (10 points). Monreal recorded a team-high six rebounds.
The Otters trailed nearly the entire first half and were down by as many as 17 points (34-17). The Toros took a 39-26 lead into the locker room.
The Otters began the second half on a 20-6 terror, taking their first lead of the half at 46-45 on a 3-pointer by Williams.
Both teams traded baskets before the Otters went on a 9-1 run to take their largest lead, 61-52, on a jumper by junior #Sean Jergo# at 7:09. The Toros closed the lead again at 70-70 with two minutes left, but the Otters regained the lead on Ray's trey.
CSUMB clinched the victory on a jumper and a free-throw by Mitchell with less than ten seconds left.
“It was a tale of two halves, and we could do nothing right in the first half,” said Otters head coach
Rob Bishop. “Then in the second, we were able to get the ball inside and good things happened for us.
“Like I have been telling the guys all year, you need splits on the road. We did it the hard way but I am proud of them.
The Otters rebounded in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the field after a 23.1 percent first half showing. CSUMB also dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Toros, 38-33
CSUMB returns to the Kelp Bed to welcome San Francisco State on Thursday, Jan 15. The Otters take on UC San Diego on Friday, Jan 16. Both games tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
