SEASIDE Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team earned their first victory of the season, sweeping the William Jessup Warriors in their first match of the Otter Invitational. The final scores were 25-9, 25-11 and 25-16.
CSUMB provided an united front with four Otters earning more than five kills in this short three set match. Junior college transfer #Annique Melese# led the way with eight kills.
Sophomore #Dana Grimm# scored her first double-double of the season with 24 assists and 11 digs.
Combined effort of juniors #Kerri Sudarsana# and #Elizabeth Hanna# notched the Otters their three block assists and junior #Niccole Deneke# racked up CSUMB's lone block solo.
The Otters achieved a season-high 11 aces and a .387 hitting percentage.
Warriors Morgan Sauders and Tabitha Gray each got five kills.
"I am proud of the intensity and discipline our team brought to the match,” said head coach
Jody Garry. “They played hard and efficient, and that is what will help us be successful in the CCAA."
Cal State Monterey Bay will return to the court to play No. 9 Western Washington at 7:00 pm this evening.

Game 2: WWU 3, CSUS 1
No. 9 Western Washington came out victorious in the second match of the Otter Invitational after dropping the first set to Cal State Stanislaus (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-12).
WWU's Angie Alvord aced six serves and had six kills allowing them to get ahead of the Stanislaus Warriors. Libero Allison Gotz notched a match-high 32 digs.
The Warriors were led by sophomore Jen Gee and freshman Lianne Vicchio, who eached racked up 11 kills.
Western Washington will see Cal State Monterey Bay in the Kelp Bed tonight at 7 p.m. Cal State Stanislaus faces Eastern New Mexico University at 4:30 p.m.
Game 1: ENMU 3, WJU 0
Eastern New Mexico blanked William Jessup University in a 3-0 victory kicking off the first game of the Otter Invitational at Cal State Monterey Bay. The ENMU Zias had a team hitting percentage of .248 while William Jessup struggled with a -.035.
Zias key hitters Vanessa Wilcox scored nine kills with Nicole Vanderploeg adding eight more. Defensive player Caitlin Murphey held a team high of 20 digs.
William Jessup Warrior's Corrisa Jacomini played strong defense with a total of 23 digs half the total team count. Morgan Sauders gave the team seven kills.
William Jessup squares off against Cal State Monterey Bay at 2 p.m. and ENMU returns to the court at 4:30 PM against Cal State Stanislaus.
