The Otter softball team cheers from the dugout on Thursday.
ARCATA, Calif. — A historic season for the CSU Monterey Bay softball team came to an end Thursday as the Otters fell 4-2 to Seattle University at the NCAA Division II West Regional held at Humboldt State University.
It was the second loss of the double-elimination tournament for the Otters, who fell to Western Oregon 9-1 on Wednesday. CSUMB finishes the season with a 35-26 record.
Starter #Angela Cabral# (19-10) hit the leadoff batter and gave up a two-run homer to Jane Purdy to start the game. The Otters tried to dig out of the hole right away, putting two runners on base in both the second and third innings, but were not able to score.
Cabral recovered from her poor start and struck out the final two batters of the first and didn't allow another hit until the fifth inning. But, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Cabral hit Purdy and then made a two-base error when Lauren Berin grounded back to her. Purdy scored to make it 3-0. Cabral then gave up a double to Kaha Weir and it was 4-0 as Berin crossed the plate.
#Ashlee Trotter# led off with a single to start a rally in the sixth. #Shae Olds#, #Jill Artoff# and #Megan Luna# all followed with singles of their own and CSUMB scored a run and had the bases loaded, but the rally was squelched. Kasey Kaufman made the last out with a hard line drive to right field. #Homa Shafii# started the seventh with a homer to make the final score 4-2.
Redhawks starter Erin Martin (24-4) pitched a complete game to earn the victory. She gave up 11 hits and struck out two. Cabral gave up just two hits in her five innings of work and just two of the four runs scored on her were earned. Jessica Boyle pitched a perfect sixth inning.
Picked to finish last in a preseason poll by the coaches in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, CSUMB finished fourth in the CCAA and ranked No. 2 in the West Region, the highest regional ranking attained by a CSUMB sport. The team arguably had the best season of any sport in CSUMB history. The Otters earned a spot in the CCAA Championship tourney and the West Regional.
Four players were honored during the season as CCAA Player of the Week: third baseman Trotter, rightfielder Shafii, designated hitter Olds and pitcher Boyle. Shafii and Luna were both selected to the All-CCAA team.
