SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 20 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay earned a walk-off win and a huge doubleheader split with No. 4 Cal State East Bay to open their 4-game series Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. East Bay took the opener, 6–1, before the Otters rallied for a thrilling 6–5 win in the nightcap.

CSUMB (22–7, 7–3 CCAA) moved percentage points ahead of East Bay in the still early CCAA race. The Pioneers dipped to 22–4 and 4–2.

For Otter fans, Friday was all about the nightcap. East Bay took the lead three times, but each time the Otters found a way to respond. Tied 5–5 going to the bottom of the seventh, Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) led off with a double in front of cleanup hitter Nevaeh Martinez (Soquel HS), who laid down a perfect bunt to move the Otters 60 feet from victory.

Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) followed with a slow grounder to third. Jennavee Campos ranged to her left but had to spin and throw to make the play at first. Alba took advantage of the soft throw across the diamond to sprint home with the winning run, handing Pioneer ace Marissa Quintero (16–1) her first loss of 2026 in the process.

Alba finished Game 2 with a double and a triple. Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) and Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) also had two hits apiece in the nightcap.

Quintero was sharp in the opener, going the distance for her league-leading 16th win. Only Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) solved her, smashing two hits, including her second homer of the season.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Jesslyn Cuellar singled in a pair of runs to make it 6–1 East Bay in the fourth inning. CSUMB never got the tying run to the on deck circle again.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Abreanna Alba raced home on a slow grounder by Nani Arreola to give the Otters the walk-off victory.

BEATING THE BEST… Friday's 6–5 win over No. 4 Cal State East Bay was CSUMB's first of the season and 65th win all-time against nationally–ranked opposition since the program began in 2006. CSUMB is 65–92 all–time against Top 25 opponents.

ALBA ON A STREAK… Abreanna Alba reached safely in both games to run her streak of reaching safely to 17 games. That's the longest streak by an Otter this season.

GANADEN GOES YARD… Kieley Ganaden hit her second homer of the season in Friday's opener. She is the first player to hit a home run off Pioneer ace Marissa Quintero this season and the first to hit one off her in a regular season game since Mar. 15, 2025.

TRIPLE THE FUN… Abreanna Alba's triple in Game 2 was CSUMB's 16th of the season. That leads the league by six. That also (already) ranks No. 3 in the Otter record book for triples in a season. The 2012 Otters hit 26 triples and the 2022 squad hit 23.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Kieley Ganaden (2).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Abreanna Alba (4), Gracie Strycula (2). TRIPLES: Abreanna Alba (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Pioneers will conclude their 4-game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex, First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. If you can't make it to the games, you can catch all of the action on the FloSports Network (OtterAthletics.com/watch).
