Baseball splits day two with UC San Diego, 1-11 and 8-4

LA JOLLA, Calif. --- With one game left in their 2008 season the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team split two games today with #8 UC San Diego, losing 1-11 in the first and winning 8-4 in the second. #Patrick McClain# picked up a loss while #Norman Hebert# got his first win of the season.

In game one CSUMB posted nine hits and one run, however it was not enough against the Tritons 16 hits and 11 runs. Both #Andrew Marquardt# and #Steve Mays# got two hits each for the Otters, with Marquardt bringing in the Otters only point with a double to right center which brought in #Brent Sargenti#.

The Tritons reached their peak in the sixth inning; scoring six runs off of seven hits. They ended the inning off a double from the bat of Chris Franco who scored Evan Kehoe. Also that inning Garrett Imeson, Tony Bonelli, Nick Burke, James Ferguson and Vance Albitz all reached home.

The Otters came out strong in game two scoring at least one run all seven innings except the sixth. The Tritons answered with six hits to the Otters 12, and UCSD's four runs were no match for CSUMB's eight.

#Matt Ralls#, #Matt DeJesus#, and #Jayson Furia# all recorded two hits each to lead the offensive charge. A culmination of their efforts came in the fourth and fifth innings with a total of four runs and five hits. Furia started it off for the Otters singling to center field which was followed by a single from Sargenti. Both Furia and Sargenti then reached on an error by the Triton's second baseman off the bat of Ralls.

In the fifth inning DeJesus brought both himself and Marquardt home with his seventh homerun of the season.

McClain now 2-5, picked up the loss in the first game after pitching 5.1 innings. Hebert (1-1), master of the knuckleball, pitched 4.1 innings in the second game to grab his first win. Matt Rossman (9-4) and Guido Knudson (6-4) got a loss and a win, respectively, for UCSD.

After the day CSUMB is now 16-35 overall (8-27 CCAA) while UCSD moves to 41-13 (25-10). The Otters end their 2008 season tomorrow against the Tritons. First pitch is at noon.
