Men's golf team finishes 10th out of 19 teams in Phoenix

Strong showing for Otters at Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational

GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- #John Jackson# and #Ricky Stockton# both shot a combined 216 over the three-days of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz. to pace Cal State Monterey Bay to a 10th place finish at the tournament's conclusion on Tuesday.

Stockton started the tourney on Sunday with a 67, which was the third-lowest round any golfer had at the tourney. Jackson (74, 71, 71) and Stockton (67, 75, 74) both tied for 11th place overall. Kevin Stinson of Wayland Baptist University shot a 205 to win the tourney and his team finished with an 845 total for first as well.

CSUMB finished with a combined 883. #Scott Yeakel# (77, 73, 77) shot 216 and ended tied for 57th, #Martin Hardenberger# (79, 74, 75) finished at 228 and in 61st and #Oskar Nystrom#'s score of 235 was left out. There were 99 golfers competing, Jackson led all of them in scoring pars with 42.

CSUMB, ranked 44th nationally and 7th in the West Region, finished ahead of 12th-place UC San Diego (ranked 10th in the West), but finished behind sixth-place CSU San Bernardino (ranked No. 8 in the West). Grand Canyon, ranked No.6 in the West, also placed better than CSUMB.

The top eight teams qualify for the Super Western Regionals, a qualifier for the NCAA Division II championship. If CSUMB does not finish in the top eight, the Otters would have to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament to qualify.
