SURPRISE, Ariz --- A two-out RBI-single in the 10th inning took down the Otters Friday night, as Cal State Monterey Bay lost to Grand Canyon University 8-7 at Surprise Stadium.
CSUMB's first two batters #Matt Rall# and #Shea Davis# both had three hits and #Andrew Marquardt# had three RBIs hitting behind them to lead an offense that scored a pair of runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to keep pace with the Antelopes.
CSUMB starter #Justin Aguilera# pitched the first six innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits. #Nadav Poringer# (0-4) gets the loss despite an excellent outing. He pitched the rest of the way and did not allow a run until the 10th, spreading out four hits over his 3 2/3 innings.
The Otters nearly scored in the top of the 10th. #Jacob Flores# led off the inning with a double and went to third on a sacrifice. But Flores would be thrown out at the plate by the pitcher on a suicide squeeze attempt with Rall bunting. Rall was then thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.
With the loss, the Otter's record drops to 9-34 while GCU moves to 10-29. The two teams play again on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
