GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- High winds led to high scores at the Maverick Invitational Tuesday, hosted by Mesa State College at the Golf Club at Redlands Mesa, but Cal State Monterey Bay's #Cicilia Chudivan#'s 85 was low enough to secure her first place with a two-round score of 156.
Chudivan shot a 71 on Monday for a four-stroke lead going into the day, but she said high winds, possibly the worst she's ever played in, made the second round terribly difficult. "It was unbelievable," she said. "It was so windy the ground was shaking."
CSUMB finished second in the tournament, 16 strokes behind Chico State. #Darcy Lake# finished the tourney 80-86-166, #Tivi Latu# 79-95-174, #Lauren Grounds# 92 -89-181 and #Jessica Yee# 88-96-184.
The lowest score of the day was an 83 by Chico State's Megan Chang, but all of Chico's golfers finished in the 80s on Tuesday. CSUMB coach Teri Greene said the conditions were a new challenge for the Monterey Bay golfers.
"The winds were a constant 30 to 40 mph with 50 mph gusts," said Greene. "We had balls blowing off the greens. We are not very experienced playing in those kind of conditions."
CSUMB entered the tournament ranked No. 7 in the region and Chico State ranked No. 9. The Otters need to at least stay in the top eight to make the post-season regional tournament.
