Mixed day in Turlock for CSUMB men's golf team

Otters finish behind some key regional rivals, ahead of others

TURLOCK, Calif. --- #Ricky Stockton# finished one over par and tied for fifth at the 35th Annual Buzzini Stanislaus Invitational at Turlock Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, but the CSUMB men's golf team shot a combined 305 on the final round and missed an opportunity to beat some key regional competition.

Individual medalist Jarin Todd led his Sonoma State Seawolves to the tournament championship for the first time ever as the All-American shot a tournament-record 8-under 208.  Ranked No. 1 nationally, Sonoma State tallied 872 for the title, five strokes ahead of host No. 4 CSU Stanislaus (877), followed by Cal State San Bernardino (878) and No. 5 Chico State (888).

The Otters placed seventh in the tournament with a score of 893, 17 above par. #Scott Yeakel# (75 77 72 224) finished +8 and tied for 23rd, #John Jackson# (70 77 78 225) finished at +9 and tied for 31st, #Martin Hardenberger# (72 76 82 230) finished at +14 and tied for 51st and #Bobby Campbell# (72 79 85 236) finished +20 and tied for 64th.

"We just didn't get it done today," said CSUMB head golf coach Bill Paulson. "Everybody we needed to beat, beat us. I think we're OK for the regionals, but it should tighten it up a bit."

Heading into the tourney, CSUMB was ranked No. 23 nationally and No. 7 in the West Region. The top eight from each region can qualify for the post-season tourney. Fortunately, CSUMB did finish ahead of some stiff competition. Western Washington (No. 7) and Hawaii Hilo, both strong regional competitors, finished in back of CSUMB.

Paulson said Stockton is playing good golf right heading into the post-season.

"He didn't putt extremely well, but he hit a lot of greens," Paulson said. "That's a good sign for the upcoming CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) tournament. If he starts putting, he'll really shoot a low score."
