Otters lose to Sonoma State 6-2 to end series

CSUMB plays Nevada-Reno on Tuesday

ROHNERT PARK --- Sonoma State scored six runs by the fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way Sunday, finishing a four-game sweep of Cal State  Monterey Bay with a 6-2 victory.

CSUMB had eight hits compared to six for Sonoma, but couldn't take advantage of the baserunners. Jacob Flores was thrown out at home to end the second inning and Steve Mays was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on a base hit by Matt DeJesus to end the third inning. Flores was stranded at second at the end of the fourth and the Otters had two runners on in the eighth before the next three batters struck out.

In the bottom of the third, the Seawolves scored three times on an RBI fielder's choice from Tyrese McDaniel, an RBI single by Mark Pestorich and an RBI double by Ian Bridges.  SSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth on Trevor Howell's home run to left field.

Kevin Asselin (2-0) pitched five innings and gave up two runs to earn the victory. Patrick McClain took the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, in 3 2/3 innings. Adam Lanthier and Greg Fisher finished the game for CSUMB without giving up another run.

Flores finished 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Dejesus was 2-3 with a run and a walk. CSUMB falls to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference. All six losses are to Sonoma (17-1, 6-0). CSUMB will play Nevada-Reno on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Reno.
