Tarleton State defends title; CSUMB finishes a close third to undefeated team

SEASIDE --- Women from 12 different colleges finished the second and final round of the Lady Otter Spring Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course on Tuesday, but the winner was a high school junior from Sweden, Anjelika Hammar, who shot an even par 146 to win by five strokes.

Hammar came with a team of high school girls from Sweden that competed as the Scandinavian Amateurs. All of them are hoping to be recruited by American colleges. They finished second to Tarleton State, of Texas, losing in a tiebreaker. Both scored 630 in the two-day tourney. Cal State Monterey Bay finished a close third at 633, a dozen strokes ahead of fourth-place Cal Baptist University and 32 ahead of fifth place Chico State.

Tarleton State of Texas, the defending champions of the invitational, have not lost a tournament all year and are the third-ranked Division II school in the nation. Head coach Jerry Doyle said his team played much better today, especially on the back nine. His players gained the three strokes they needed to beat CSUMB on the final hole.

“We didn't play that well yesterday and we almost lost,” said Doyle. “Those high school girls were tremendously talented. I wouldn't mind recruiting some of them.”

One of Doyle's past recruits, Shraddhanjali Singh, shot a 70 on Tuesday to set a tournament record. She finished at +5 with a 151. Andrea Lowe of Tarleton placed third at +8, Maline Thorberg of Cal Baptist finished +9 and #Cicilia Chudivan# of CSUMB finished fourth at +10.

“The coach really helped me out on the back nine and I got a little lucky. I hit an eagle on 10 and that's a tough hole,” said Singh.

The Otters' high finish was due to cluster of strong performances. #Tivi Latu#, #Jessica Yee# and #Lauren Grounds# (160 and +14) finished in a tie for sixth with two other players. Co-head coaches Marianne Towersey and Teri Greene both said they were very happy with the team's play.

“We had hopes of sneaking in there ahead of Tarleton, but we're pleased to beat our rivals Chico State,” said Towersey. “We're hoping on making regionals for the first time.”

Tarleton State is the alma mater of the Bayonet Golf Course's Director of Golf Joe Priddy and Doyle was his teammate on the golf team. Priddy said he was impressed with the caliber of play from the young women.

“The ladies were excellent players. The scores were significantly better on the second day and it's a real testament that women's golf keeps improving,” he said.

Everyone was impressed with Hammar. Her coach, Mimmie Dowling, said she recruited her for the squad the first time she saw her play. “I saw Hammar two years ago and I knew right away she was going to be very good,” said Dowling.

Hammar will be highly recruited and she has had a lot of exposure to American courses. The team tours the United States every year. “Last year we played in Florida and Kentucky,” said Dowling. “This course is beautiful; it has a great layout and is in great shape. This bay is a wonderful place for golf courses.”
