CARSON, Calif. --- #Jose Sanchez# scored 28 points to lead the Otters over CSU Dominguez Hills and into a tie for at least sixth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
After leading by nearly 20 in the second half, CSUMB needed a clutch performance from the free throw line by #Steve Monreal# to seal the 72-67 victory. The win is the Cal State Monterey Bay basketball's teams eighth in the past nine games. The Otters are now 9-8 in the CCAA and are tied with both CSUDH and Cal Poly Pomona. CSUMB will face CSU Los Angeles (7-9) tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Los Angeles.
Sanchez shot 10 of 15 from the field and pulled down three rebounds. Guards Monreal (15) and #DShon Cannon# (11) also scored in double figures. CSUMB led 38-26 at halftime and 49-30 early in the second half, but Dominguez Hills came back to trail 68-64 with 41 seconds and then trailed by just one when Rodney Yearby made a layup with 16 seconds left. The Toros then immediately fouled Monreal, who made both his free throws.
The Toros tried to tie it with a three-ball and Monreal grabbed the missed shot and was fouled again. He sank two more free throws to put CSUMB ahead by the final score.
Cal State Monterey Bay will finish its regular season next week with a home game against San Francisco State on Wednesday and a home game against UC San Diego on Friday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
