SEASIDE — Cal State Monterey Bay's new Baseball/Softball complex will be officially opened Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:35 p.m. The baseball team will play a doubleheader against CSU Dominguez Hills beginning at 9 a.m. and the softball team will face CSU Stanislaus at 1 p.m.
CSUMB President Dianne Harrison will speak and cut the ribbon with Athletic Director Howard Gauthier. Dennis Lehnen, sports director for KSBW Channel 8, will be master of ceremonies for the event.
The 9 a.m. doubleheader is a change to the schedule due to the rain expected this weekend. The CSUDH baseball team is 3-10 on the season, having been outscored 94-69. A lot of those runs have come early in games against starters Clay Young (0-1, 27.0 ERA), Matt Hopps (0-2, 9.75 ERA) and Bret Montgomery (1-2, 4.58 ERA). The Toros have a dangerous offense, batting .300 as a team. Shortstop Cody Puckett is hitting .341 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. The Otters will play against CSUDH on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. and a final game is scheduled for Sunday at 11 a.m.
The softball team will play a doubleheader on Friday and again on Saturday, but at noon. The CSU Stanislaus softball team is 3-7 on the year. The Warriors' top pitcher is Jessica Gaumnitz (2-1) with a 2.82 ERA.
The new fields at the CSUMB Baseball/Softball Complex feature a new synthetic turf that will save from 12 to 15 acre feet of water each year. New scoreboards with a decorative truss design and featuring the CSUMB Otter logo have been installed in both fields. New bleachers have also been constructed at both fields.
