Otters finish sixth out of 40 team in Phoenix

Shafii starts and finishes trip with two-run homer

PHOENIX, Ariz --- Cal State Monterey Bay, eliminated Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Minnesota State, finished sixth out of 40 teams at the Schutt Sports/Leadoff Classic at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix.

The team finished 2-3 over Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Otters won their initial pool with two victories on Thursday. In the team's first game, Homa Shafii, the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Player of the Week last week, continued her hot hitting, smashing a two-run homer in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie against Quincy University. Pitcher Angela Cabral earned her fourth victory of the season.

Freshman Noemi Torres (3-1) of Watsonville allowed one run in seven innings to lead the Otters to a 9-1 victory over St. Martin's in the second game. Ashlee Trotter of Salinas blasted a two-run homer to lead the offense. CSUMB then moved to the Gold bracket. The Otters lost 6-1 to Colorado School of the Mines, 6-2 to Humboldt State University, and 4-3 to Minnesota State.

Shafii hit her second two-run homer of the tourney against Minnesota and the Otters had a 3-0 lead early. Minnesota then scored one in the fourth and three in the sixth. Jessica Boyle took the loss.

The team is home on Friday and will play CSU Stanislaus at 1 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held before the game to celebrate the new CSUMB Baseball/Softball Complex. KSBW's Dennis Lehnan will host the event and CSUMB president Dianne Harrison will speak.
