SEASIDE --- St. Martin's University started the first inning with three runs, finished the ninth with two more and scored more in between, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 11-6 Friday afternoon at CSUMB's new baseball field.
Saints first baseman Tom Barlow had the best day at the plate, going 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. His teammate Mickey Letofsky was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Matt Dejesus (3-5, 2 R) and Jayson Furia (2-3, 2 RBI) led the Otters' offense.
Pat Capone gave up three runs on eight hits through six innings to earn the win. He struck out four and walked three. Daniel Bifano took the loss with 3.1 innings pitched, five hits, three walks and six earned runs. He struck out three. None of the five pitchers CSUMB used escaped without giving up a run. Michael Trump had the best line of the day with 2.2 innings, four hits, one run, one walk and a strikeout.
The teams will play two more games today starting at 11 a.m. The new baseball field is behind the CSUMB pool, off of Second Avenue.
