Box Score

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Senior #Steve Monreal# led four players in double figures to help Cal State Monterey Bay knock off Concordia University, St. Paul to win, 86-80, in the final game of the Otter Classic on Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Otter Sports Center.

Monreal posted team highs of 18 points and six assists, while juniors #Dante Green# and #Keith Wilson# added 14 points apiece.  Senior #Jose Sanchez# had 12 points and three assists.  Senior #Joe Mitchell# pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Concordia was led by junior Craig Heimen with 19 points.

Five minutes into the game, Sanchez's six points and Wilson's five points gave the Otters an 11-9 lead.
Sanchez's three-pointer brought the Otters within one, 31-30, at 5:45 on the clock. A goaltending call awarded Wilson a basket to give the Otters a 32-31 lead.

A steal by Monreal that ended with a layup gave the Otters their largest lead of the half, 43-35. Golden Bear's A.J. Allen scored with one second left on the clock to end the half at 43-37.

The first half consisted of 11 lead changes as the Otters shot 62.5 percent from the field and only 8-for-16 from the charity stripe.

Monreal opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Otters lead to 49-37. The Golden Bears answered with a 7-0 run stopped by Green connecting on a pair of free throws.

Otters regained a 10 point lead on a jumper by Green with 9:27 on the board. Junior #Trevor Ray# and senior #Stephen Becker# hit back-to-back threes to extend the CSUMB lead to 73-58.

Concordia went on a 10-0 run to cut the Otters lead to 80-76 with 48 seconds left in the game. Wilson made an old fashion three-point play at 83-76.  The Otters never allowed the Golden Bears within four to finish with an 86-80 victory.

“This was a great weekend for us as we were able to beat two quality teams in the early season with solid defense and rebounding,” said Otter head coach Rob Bishop. “We continue to grow as a team and it was nice to get some timely shooting from Jose (Sanchez), Stephen (Becker) and Trevor (Ray) who have been slumping lately.“

“We now need to carry this momentum into a very important upcoming conference weekend.”
CSUMB begins conference play this weekend, taking on Chico State on Friday, Dec. 5, followed by a match-up against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Dec. 6. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
