SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior #Dante Green# scored 19 points, including back-to-back baskets in the final minutes that gave Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team the lead for good en route to a 68-65 win over Seattle Pacific University on Friday, Nov. 28 in the first round of the Otter Classic basketball tournament.
With this victory, CSUMB made school history by starting the season out 3-0, the best start since the Otters moved to NCAA Division II in 2004.
“We beat a very good Seattle Pacific team tonight despite it not being very pretty, but we found a way to make plays when we needed to,” said Otter head coach
Rob Bishop. “Seattle Pacific is going to win a lot of games this year.”
Green recorded eight rebounds with five on the offensive end. Senior #Steve Monreal# and junior #Keith Wilson# both finished with 17 points. Sophomore #Warren Freeman# pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
The Falcons were led by sophomore Chris Banchero's 15 points.
The Otters scored the first seven points of the game. The play of the game was on a fast transition when Monreal alley-opp the ball to Green who slammed it home for a 21-14 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. The duo repeated the play two minutes later to get the crowd on their feet once again to give the Otters a 12 point cushion.
An 8-1 run by SPU closed the lead to 34-25 at halftime.
The Falcons steadily chipped away at the deficit and took their first lead at 46-44 on a three-pointer by Jeff Downs with 11:22 left to play. SPU's owned its largest lead at 50-46 before the Otters scored seven straight points.
There were seven second-half lead changes before Green's heroics gave Monterey Bay control.
Banchero scored a layup at 2:18 to put the Falcons ahead 61-58. Green answered with a layup at 1:47 to trim SPU's lead to 61-60. Green then connected on a 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining to push the Otters in front 63-61.
Monreal converted five of six free throws during the final 20 seconds to secure the win. The final two free throws were rewarded to CSUMB after a SPU player called a time-out when the Falcons were out of timeouts.
“Monreal was once again huge for us at the free throw line and we got some big baskets by Green and Wilson,” Bishop said. “When we play with good energy on defense, we can be pretty good.”
CSUMB out-rebounded the Falcons, 32-28, including 17 offensive boards.
The Otters return to the court in the final game of the Otter Classic presented by Holiday Inn Express – Marina on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
