This is also a first in the history of the program that the Otters were victorious in the season opener.

“I am really proud of how our team battled today,” said head coach Renee Jimenez. “I think every person on this team stepped up at some point in this game and made big plays.”

Junior #Helen Suarez# had 24 points, 20 coming from the free-throw line. Suarez also added eight rebounds and six steals. Junior #Janet Oseguera# pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

CSUMB jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the 15:43 minute-mark. The Otters dominated in the first half by holding the lead the entire 20 minutes. A three-pointer by Andrews gave the Otters a 38-34 lead at half-time.

The second half consisted of 13 lead changes.

Suarez blocked Maria Weigelt's shot with 20 seconds left in regulation to give the Otters one play. With only four second on the clock, Andrews drew a foul and made the back-end of the pair of free throws to tie the score at 68-68.

The Otters opened the first overtime with Andrews connecting on a three-pointer to take a 71-68 lead and finishing with U-Mary's Sonny Schulz hit two free throws with 20 seconds remaining to even the game at 78-78.

CSUMB came out strong in the second overtime with junior #Denelle Baker# making her first three-pointer of the game, sparking a 10 point run to build an eight-point cushion.

“Not only was this a great win for our program but it was a milestone achievement for Dana to reach her 1,000 point mark,” said Jimenez.  “She is everything a coach could ask for in a student-athlete.”

The Otters complete day two at the Notre Dame de Namur Tournament with a 1 p.m. contest against Western Oregon University on Sunday, Nov. 16.
