Otters host two conference foes on Friday, Saturday

Cal State Monterey Bay's women's basketball team will host two conference opponents this weekend, including CSU San Bernardino, the leader of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Friday the Otters (2-15 overall and 1-9 in conference) will host Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos are 8-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Three players are averaging double figures in scoring for Pomona; Vanessa Dominguez, a 5' 8” senior forward, is scoring 12.9 per game; Reyana Colson, a 5' 6” freshman guard, has 12.8 points per game; and Andrea Ohlssen, a 5' 7” junior guard is scoring 10.1 per game. Dominguez and Colson also lead the team in rebounding with 5.8 and 5.4 boards a game respectively.

The Broncos are fourth in the conference in team offense with 65.8 points and are eighth in team defense, allowing 66.4 points. CSUMB played the Broncos on Dec. 1 and won 77-71, the team's lone conference victory. #Dana Andrews#, who leads the Otters with 19.1 points a game (second in the conference), scored 27 points that night, hitting 13 of 15 free throws. Andrews is suffering from a sprained ankle and missed Saturday night's game against UC San Diego. She is questionable to play this weekend.

If Andrews does not play, that will make for a difficult night, especially against CSU San Bernardino. The Coyotes are 14-3 overall and 8-2 in conference, and when CSUMB played them on Nov. 30, the Coyotes squeaked out a 47-45 victory. Andrews scored 18 that day and point guard #Alma Lopez# contributed with nine. Vanessa Wilt scored 16 for CSUSB and Rachel Johnson had a dozen.

Wilt has led the Coyotes in scoring in 14 of their 17 games. The 6' 1” center is the conference leader in scoring with 20.1 points per game. She is also averaging an astounding 13.8 rebounds each game. Shanae Blake is the only other player averaging double figures; the 5' 5” guard is scoring 11.1 points per game. The Coyotes are third in the conference in team offense with 67.6 points and fifth in team defense 59.1 points per game. That is in stark contrast to the Otters, who are last in the conference in team defense with 73.9 points and seventh in offense with 63.8.
