SEASIDE --- The Otters fell to CSU Los Angeles 122-118 in triple overtime Friday night despite an outstanding night by point guard #DShon Cannon#, who scored 37 points and made 11 assists.
Cal State Monterey Bay (2-11 overall and 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) played a close game with CSULA (10-4, 4-3) throughout, with no team ever leading by double digits. Down by three with seconds left, the Otters looked like they had lost near the end of regulation. But Cannon, who hit 14 of 20 shots, sprinted down the court, found #Stephen Becker# wide open on the opposite side and Becker sent the ball through the net just after the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 92. The game would go into a second overtime when, tied at 101, the Otters had 14 seconds left and the ball but failed to convert.
In the second overtime, the Otters led by two after #Juston Willis# made one of two at the line with 7.5 seconds left, but Vincent Camper drove down the court and made a layup to send it to the third extra period. Near the end of the third OT, the Otters were behind 120-118 with 8 seconds left and without the ball. That forced the Otters to foul and hope CSULA missed free throws. But Camper made both free throws to wrap up a 122-118 victory.
Besides Cannon's big night, #Augie Johnston# was a big contributor with 24 points and #Joe Mitchell# would add 21 while leading CSUMB in rebounds with 13. Willis finished with 13 points, Becker 11 and #Jose Sanchez# with 10. Camper led all scorers with 40.
Cannon's 35 points brought his career total at CSUMB to 750 and he passed Rocky Steryo (736 career points in 48 games) and Richard Jenkins (740 in 57 games) to become the fourth leading scorer in school history. It was Cannon's 70th game. Ahead of Cannon at third is Jay Demaestri with 864 points.
Tonight the Otters play CSU Dominguez Hills at the Otter Sports Center. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 p.m.
