SEASIDE --- An early lead would be the only lead for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team Saturday night as the Otters fell to visiting Humboldt State University 72-59.
The night started well for CSUMB, which jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the game, but HSU rallied and led 34-27 at the break. The Otters came out in second half with a 7-1 run to close the gap to 35-32 before HSU's Biava Arganda got things going with a trey from the right side of the half circle, and then a jumper in the lane. A minute later she drove in for a layup and the Otters were down nine again, 42-33.
Jennifer Enos' three-point bucket with 13:30 left put the Lumberjacks ahead by double digits, 45-34. With five minutes left in the game the Otters still trailed 58-48, but #Alma Lopez# went on a little run by herself, making a trip to the free-throw line and then hitting a jumper with four minutes left to make it 51-58.
The Otters were able to keep HSU within reach until Taylor Kilgore nailed a three-pointer to give the 'Jacks a 67-55 lead with 1:41 left. That bucket sealed the victory and Otters would not threaten HSU again.
CSUMB's #Dana Andrews# led scorers with 18, sinking seven of 12. Lopez chipped in with 15. For HSU, Enos scored 16 and Kayla Henry had 10. HSU shot 8-15 from the three-point line compared to just 3-9 for the Otters.
The Otters play again at home on Friday. They face CSU Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m. at the Otter Sports Center.
