D'Shon Cannon scores 19 in second half

SEASIDE --- #DShon Cannon# scored 24 points to pace the Cal  State Monterey  Bay men's basketball team to their first conference victory Friday night.

The Otters, 2-9 overall and 1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, defeated visiting Sonoma State (6-5; 2-3) 91-79. The Otters built a 40-25 halftime lead with great team play; eight of their 16 baskets came off assists. But in the second half it was Cannon who carried the team. Time after time the 5' 9” guard drove to the basket and made acrobatic layups. Cannon scored 19 points after the break.

“DShon was really spectacular tonight,” said CSUMB head coach #Pat Kosta#. “That was just a lot of individual artistry on his part.”

Steve Cornett led the Seawolves with 15 points and his teammate Kyle Shandera scored 14, but multiple Otters scored in double digits. #Juston Willis# had 13, #Jose Sanchez# had 19 and #Augie Johnston# 15. Kosta singled out #Stephen Becker# for playing great defense.

“That was probably the best game Becker has played all season,” said Kosta. “And Sanchez (4-6 from the three-point line) had a wonderful night offensively.”

The Otters face Humboldt State University tonight. The game tips off at the Otter Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.
