Unprecedented Five in a Row for the Otters!

CSUMB claims its fifth straight CCAA regular season title

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 12-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team became the first program in the storied history of the California Collegiate Athletic Association to win five consecutive regular season championships.

The Otters claimed their fifth in a row outright, downing Stanislaus State, 6-3, in the front end of Friday's doubleheader. CSUMB dropped the second game, 10-7.

"In this game, when you do something as a program that has never been done before, five-straight conference championships, it's pretty remarkable," CSUMB head coach Walt White said. "In time, we will all reflect on the accomplishment, but we still have a lot of baseball to play and that is where our focus is."

The regular season title is now the seventh overall for the Otters as the No. 1-ranked team in the West Region moves to 36-13 overall and 21-10 in CCAA play. CSUMB will be the No. 1 seed at the CCAA Tournament in what is now its 10th-straight appearance in the annual postseason event.

"I enjoy coaching this group almost as much as they enjoy being around each other," Coach White added. "Lastly, every championship we have won, I immediately think of all our former players that have helped build who we are today. I am forever grateful to this team and every player that has come before them."

Game One

The Otters seventh-inning rally broke a 3-3 deadlock to secure the 6-3 victory over the Warriors and the outright conference title.

The game remained tightly contested through six innings, with Stanislaus State taking a 3-2 lead in the sixth when catcher Eric Perez launched a two-run home run. But the Otters refused to fold, tying the game at 3-3 before unleashing their decisive seventh-inning surge.

The seventh inning proved to be the turning point. Kyle Olimpia doubled to left-center, driving in Jason Del Villar to give CSUMB a 4-3 advantage. The momentum continued when Andrew Lehmann scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-3. Jordan Hockett capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Olimpia and sealing the 6-3 victory.

The Otters' pitching staff was equally impressive. Daniel Flores started strong, allowing five hits and three earned runs over six innings while striking out six. Kyle Giovannoni took over in relief and was dominant, pitching two scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Preston Kelly closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning to record his second save of the season.

At the plate, Kyle Olimpia led the charge with two runs and a crucial double, while Andrew Lehmann contributed two runs and a walk. Del Villar added two runs on two walks. Noah Zertuche delivered a key single in the fifth inning that drove in Del Villar to keep CSUMB within striking distance.

Game Two

The Otter offense responded in the second inning, scoring four runs to pull within one. Bobby Benavidez delivered a single to center field that drove in two runs, while Jason Harris contributed a double down the left field line that plated two more.

CSUMB added single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to reach its final total of seven, with Jason Del Villar recording two hits and two runs scored, Kyle Olimpia adding a hit and an RBI, and Bodee Goins scoring twice. James Starkus contributed two hits, while Olimpia and Goins each drew walks.

The Warriors opened the game with four runs in the first and then pulled away with four more in the third to earn their first win of the series.

The two teams will close out the regular season tomorrow at Noon. The contest will mark Senior Day for the Otters.
