Otters Close Convergence With Win

Otters beat Whiiter 15-5 after a pair of last-second setbacks

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo soothed a weekend of heartbreak with a convincing 15–5 win over Whittier College to wrap up play at the Claremont Convergence Saturday at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Aquatics Center.

The game remained close until midway through the second quarter when a Nalani Galindo (Poway HS/Miramar College) goal kicked off a 5–1 Otter run that put the game out of reach. The Poets scored at the death of the third period to pull to within six one more time, but the Otters scored the game's final four goals to seal the victory.

The win put some salve on the wounds of two last-second defeats from Friday's openers in Claremont. Tournament play opened with a last-second loss to Western Water Polo Association rival Salem University at Claremont's Axelrood Pool. CSUMB took a 5–4 lead into the final minute of play, only to see Salem score twice, the last time with three second on the clock, to steal the 6–5 victory.

Friday's late action saw NCAA Division I member Long Island University force overtime with 10 seconds remaining before scoring the match-winner with just six seconds left in overtime of its 13–12 win.

Freshman Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) led the CSUMB offense with 10 goals and seven assists, including hat tricks against Whittier and LIU. Gutierrez went a perfect 16–0 in sprints. Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) also registered 10 goals on the weekend, including hatties against Whittier and Salem.

Other highlights from the weekend included Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) posting the second 4-goal game of her career in the win over Whittier, and sophomore Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) making 11 saves in a 19–10 loss to 19th-ranked Marist College.

The Otters return home for a busy week of action by hosting their final three home games of the 2026 season. Things kick off with a rare Tuesday matinée against Freshman Pacific University. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
