Otter Win Streak Ends At Dominguez Hills

Streak ends at 15 games with 12-8, 3-1 losses

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball saw its win streak end at an impressive 15 games when Cal State Dominguez Hills took a doubleheader, 12–8 and 3–1, Saturday afternoon at Toro Diamond.

A 4-run first inning had the Otters on their way to what looked like a 16th consecutive win. But the Toro bats awoke from their Friday slumber to score five runs in the first two innings.

Solo shots by Abreanna Alba (Watsonville HS/Cabrillo College) and Ellie Escalante (Soquel HS) in the fourth inning gave the Otters their last lead at 8–5. Dominguez Hills answered with seven unanswered runs over the next two innings to seal the win.

Game 2 proved to be the lone pitcher's duel of the series, and the Toros took advantage of three Otter errors that proved to be the difference in the game.

Unearned runs in the first and third innings staked Dominguez Hills to a 2–0 lead. A Nani Arreola (Oaks Christian HS) sac fly got one run back for the Otters in the fifth inning, but that turned out to be all they would muster against the 4-hit pitching of Audrey Gallegos.

Saturday's losses dropped CSUMB (21–6, 6–2 CCAA) back into a first place tie with NCAA Division II No.1 Cal State San Marcos and No. 2 Cal State East Bay. The Otters will host both teams in the next two weeks.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… An Alyssa Martinez sac fly capped a rally of five unanswered runs to put the Toros up 12–8 after five.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Audrey Gallegos pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close the door.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… The Otter winning streak ended at 15 games Saturday in Carson. The streak was third-longest win streak in Otter history and their longest streak since winning 18 in a row from Mar. 4–Apr. 2, 2017.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END, PART II: Faith Soriano became the 23rd different player in Otter history to post a streak of 10 or more games with a knock in Game 1 Saturday. Sadly, that streak ended with an 0-for-1 performance in Game 2. FYI, Kieley Ganaden (11 game) and Nevaeh Martinez (10 games) did it earlier this season.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to start a huge homestand against the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in the nation over the next two weeks. The action kicks off Friday (Mar. 20) with a visit from No. 2 Cal State East Bay. First pitch of the opening doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
