Otters Close Och Tamale With Two Big Wins

Otters score 45 goals, Galindo, Becker score first collegiate hat tricks

REDLANDS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo evened its season record at 5–5 with a pair of big wins Saturday at the Och Tamale Tournament hosted by the University of Redlands. The Otters defeated Redlands 24–4 in their morning match before returning to the pool with a 21–6 win over Occidental College.

The 24 goals scored against Redlands were the second-most ever scored in a game by the Otters, trailing only the school record of 28 netted against Cal Tech in 2019. The 21 scored in the win over Occidental are tied for the fourth most in program history.

The Otters raced to a 9–0 lead after one period against Redlands and pulled away from there. They scored eight goals in each of the first two quarters against Occidental to put that one away early as well.

Four Otters posted hat tricks in the win over Redlands, led by Stella Martin (Clovis West HS), who added career highs of six assists and nine points. The other players wearing hats for the Otters were Nalani Galindo (Poway HS/Miramar College), and Riley Becker (Oaks Christian HS) who recorded their first hatties, and Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS).

Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) recorded seven points with two goals and five assists. Annika Harper (San Diego/Clairemont HS) chipped in five points with two goals and three assists.

Galindo topped her first hat trick in the early match with a 4-goal burst in the win over Occidental. Gutierrez, Eaton and Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) also notched hat tricks versus the Tigers.

The Otters head north to take part in the Bronco Tournament hosted by Santa Clara University Feb. 14–15. They'll open tournament play against Pomona-Pitzer Saturday at 11 a.m.
