Otters Cap Weekend With Win At Santa Clara

Otters complete first season sweep of Division I rival

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo completed a season sweep of Silicon Valley rival Santa Clara University to close play at the Santa Clara Mini Tournament at the Sullivan Aquatics Center.

CSUMB's 11–10 victory over the Broncos capped a weekend that featured strong performances against three NCAA Division I opponents, two of whom were nationally ranked. The Otters fell to No. 21 ranked Brown University, 13–9, before losing a thriller to No. 22 Pacific, 17–13.

"We played four really competitive games this weekend," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "I'm incredibly proud of how we competed against nationally ranked teams. Our effort, preparation and belief in each other showed. We're growing each week and it's exciting to see."

The win over Santa Clara was every bit as tight as the final score indicated. A 3-goal outburst midway through the third quarter from Katie Rudis (Oceanside/El Camino HS), Annika Harper (San Diego/Clairemont HS) and Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) gave the Otters a 7–5 lead. The Broncos responded with goals on their next two possessions to tie the game once again.

The teams traded goals over the next eight minutes until Gutierrez completed her hat trick with six seconds remaining to give the Otters the dramatic victory.

Even with that win in mind, the game of the weekend came Friday in the 17–13 loss to Pacific. The teams played to a standstill through the first half after UoP scored late in the second to tie the match at 7–7.

It appeared as if the Tigers were going to run and hide when they scored three unanswered goals to open the second half. But Ximena Pichon (Clovis HS) and Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) answered back and the Otters were down just 12–11 heading into the fourth.

UoP scored the first two goals in the final period, however, and CSUMB wasn't able to recover as the Tigers eased away late.

The match against Brown went in the opposite direction as an early 4-goal run helped the Bears build a 7–3 lead. CSUMB and Brown went to-to-toe over the final 22 minutes, but the Otters couldn't find a way to overcome that early 4-goal deficit.

Miramar College transfer Nalani Galindo (Poway HS) led CSUMB on the weekend with nine goals, including four against Pacific. Gutierrez chipped in seven goals and nine assists, with at least two assists in every game.

Other noteworthy achievements over the weekend included Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) scoring her 99th career goal. She now needs one more to become the 11th player in Otter history to score 100 goals.

Sosa moved into the Otter career Top 20 (18th) with 73 goals while Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) became the sixth player in Otter history to pass 100 career assists.

On the defensive end of the pool, Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) became the eighth player in Otter history to pass 300 career saves (310). Pichon moved into the career Top 10 with her 35th field block.

CSUMB returns to home action this week to host WWPA foe UC Merced Friday (Feb. 20th) for a rare 5 p.m. first sprint.
