SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team battled the No.9 team in the country tough, but eventually fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 72-64, Saturday afternoon at the Kelp Bed.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter until the Broncos went into the half after a 21-12 second quarter to sport a 38-26 lead.
CSUMB would battle back, with an even quarter in the third and then posted a 21-17 fourth quarter to outscore CPP, 38-34 in the second half.
Jennifer Moreno Ortiz led all scorers with 20 points, sinking four 3-pointers while shooting 6-for-14 from the floor.
Leah Sarabia contributed 15 points, dished out a game-high six assists and pulled down five boards, while shooting 6-of-11 from the field.
Malaysia Lucero turned in a solid performance with 10 points and six rebounds and in the full 40 minutes,
Aajah Slocum hauled in six rebounds and chipped in four points.
The Otters will hit the road for a Southern California road trip to face Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUMB opens the trek against the Golden Eagles on Thursday, Feb. 12, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
