Guttierez’s Five Goals Lift Otters Over Leopards

Otters beat La Verne, 15-5, fall to APU, 11-8

REDLANDS, Calif. — Freshman Olivia Gutierrez (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) continued the torrid start to her collegiate career with her first 5-goal game to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 15–5 win over the University of La Verne in the opening game of the Och Tamale Invitational hosted by the University of Redlands.

Gutierrez added her second hat trick of the day as a late Otter rally fell just short in an 11–8 loss to Azusa Pacific.

CSUMB's super freshman scored twice as part of an 8–1 opening burst against the Leopards. She added a pair of scores 2:07 apart to end the third period and begin the fourth.

Junior Stella Martin (Clovis West HS) enjoyed a 5-point game of her own against La Verne, scoring a pair of goals and adding three assists. Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) and Emma Sosa (Tustin/Foothill HS) also scored twice in the win.

Friday afternoon's battle with Azusa Pacific brought the thrills, even with an unhappy ending for Otter fans. The Cougars sprinted to a 6–1 halftime lead, only to see CSUMB battle back into contention after the break.

Gutierrez scored twice in an 8–3 Otter charge that pulled CSUMB back to within 9–7 with 4:06 remaining. But APU's Audrey Dexter stopped the run with a brace, and another late goal by Gutierrez wasn't enough to get the Otters back into the match.

In addition to Gutierrez, Alex Harris (Davis Senior HS) had her second 2-goal game of the season against APU. Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa White (Union City/Mission San Jose HS) enjoyed her fourth double-digit save game of the season with 12 stops.

The Otters will conclude play at the Och Tamale Invitational Saturday with games against host Redlands at 11 a.m. and Occidental College at 3:30 p.m.
