Otters Complete Sweep Of L.A., Win 82–73

Otters move into a tie for third place with key victory

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay completed a season sweep of Cal State L.A. by picking up a big road win, 82–73, Thursday night in CSULA's University Gym.

With the win, the Otters improved to 15–8 overall and 10–7 in CCAA play. Combined with Cal State East Bay's 88–84 win at Cal Poly Humboldt, the Otters now are tied for third in the CCAA race with five games remaining.

CSULA fell to 7–16 and 6–11 with the loss.

CSUMB could point to several heroes in this one, led by senior center Mezziah Oakman (Columbia, S.C./UCSB), who scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to help the Otters hold back a Cal State L.A. comeback attempt. He added a game-high 11 rebounds to complete his sixth double-double of the season.

Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) also enjoyed a big second half with 14 of his team-high 17 points in the period. He went 7-for-7 from the line down the stretch to keep the Golden Eagles at arm's length over the final three minutes.

The Otters never trailed in the first half, but L.A. kept it close. Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) made a jumper on the game's opening possession before a Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) layup broke the half's only tie on CSUMB's next possession.

A Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) 3-pointer extended the Otter lead to 26–10 midway through the first half. But the Golden Eagles answered back, trimming the deficit to two points before the Otters escaped the period with a 38–32 lead.

A 10–2 run to open the second half gave L.A. its only lead of the night at 42–40 three minutes after the restart. A Mora 3-pointer started a 15–3 Otter spurt that put them back in front to stay. Although CSUMB never led by more than 12 over the final 10 minutes, the Golden Eagles never held the ball within a possession of the lead for the balance of the night.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. That moment came when Jackson Corley went to the line to shoot a pair with the Otters leading 80–73 and nine seconds remaining.

HOW SWEEP IT IS: Thursday's 82–73 win completed CSUMB's first season sweep of Cal State L.A. since the 2006-07 season. It's CSUMB's fourth-ever sweep of the Golden Eagles.

ROAD SWEET ROAD: CSUMB's 82–73 win at Cal State L.A. was its seventh road win of the season, setting a school record for the most road wins since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004. Playing at the NAIA level, the 1998-99 Otters set the all-time program record by winning 13 road games.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Thursday's win at Cal State L.A., with four Otters turning the trick. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (17), Michael Mora (15), Mezziah Oakman (15) and Joey Bilello (11). It marked the 26th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

QUADRUPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Thursday win at Cal State L.A. marked the 12th time in 23 games this season that at least four Otters have scored in double digits.

TENGAN UP TO No. 4 IN CAREER SCORING: With 17 points in Thursday's win over Cal State L.A., Jaden Tengan passed Matt Dalhamer for the No. 4 spot on the Otter career scoring list with 1,085 points. Next up is Jahvon Johnson with 1,224 points. Alex Fertig (2013-16) owns the Otter career record with 1,370 points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Jaden Tengan 17; REBOUNDS: Mezziah Oakman 11; ASSISTS: Jackson Corley/Chol Deng 5; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello 2; STEALS: Michael Mora 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2-game SoCal roadtrip with a visit to the Torodome to meet Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
