Otters Lose Thriller At The Buzzer

20-point games by Tengan, Mora come up one short

SEASIDE, Calif. — In arguably the most entertaining game of the season to date, Cal State Monterey Bay went down to the wire with defending NCAA Division II runner-up Cal State Dominguez Hills before falling at the buzzer, 89–88, Saturday afternoon in the Torodome.

The Otters got 22 points from Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) and 21 from CCAA leading scorer Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont), but the 20-point efforts came up one short.

CSUMB overcame a 16-point deficit with 11 minutes remaining to take an 88–87 lead on a Mora layup with 12 ticks left. David Cheatom answered with a layup of his own to put the Toros back up by one with 5.7 seconds on the clock.

Tengan brought the ball up court with a chance to win it, but his running jumper from just outside the paint bounced off the rim as time expired.

In addition to his 21 points, Mora completed his third double-double of the season with a game-high 11 rebounds. Ashton Reese (Scottsdale, Ariz./UMBC) came off the bench to score 13 points while Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) and Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game wasn't statistically over until Jaden Tangen's running jumper came off the rim as the final horn sounded.

MORA UP TO 13TH, TENGAN UP TO 15TH ON SEASON SCORING LIST: With their 20-point efforts at Dominguez Hills, Michael Mora and Jaden Tengan continued their ascents up the CSUMB single-season scoring list. Mora now is tied for 13th place with 438 points. Tengan is in 15th with 436 points. No Otter has scored 500 points in a season since Ryan Nitz scored 517 in 2016.

TENGAN PASSES 1,100 CAREER POINTS: Jaden Tengan's 22-point Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills moved put him over 1,100 points in an Otter uniform (1,106). He needs 119 points to pass Jahvon Johnson for No. 3 on the Otter career scoring list.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits in Thursday's win at Cal State L.A., with four Otters turning the trick. This time, the honors went to: Jaden Tengan (22), Michael Mora (21), Ashton Reese (13), Joey Bilello (12) and Chol Deng (10). It marked the 27th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

A QUINTET OF DOUBLE-DIGITS: Saturday's game at Cal State Dominguez Hills marked the 13th time in 24 games this season that at least four Otters scored in double digits, and the fifth time that five Otters did it.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 22; REBOUNDS: Michael Mora 11; ASSISTS: Miki Gacic 3; BLOCKS: Jackson Corley 1; STEALS: Jackson Corley/Chol Deng 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB returns to The Kelp Bed for their final two home games of the 2025-26 season Feb. 19 and 21. The action begins when No. 3 ranked Cal State East Bay visits Thursday. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
