Otters Drop A Heart-Breaker To #2 East Bay

Lead slips away in final 25 seconds of 70-68 setback

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came within 25 seconds of what would have been the biggest victory in program history before dropping a heart-breaker to No. 2 Cal State East Bay, 70–68, Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters raced to a 7–0 lead to open the game and led for most of the night, holding the advantage for 27 minutes. But East Bay rallied in the second half, and the teams played through eight ties and nine lead changes before the Pioneers claimed the final lead in the waning seconds.

The Otters led 64–63 with 25 seconds remaining when East Bay's Jaayden Bush went to the line to shoot three free throws. He made two and missed the third, but teammate Jalen Foy grabbed the offensive board and was fouled.

Foy made both shots then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled again. He made two again and the now 5-point deficit proved too big a hill to climb in the final 17 seconds.

Freshman Miki Gacic (Belgrade, Serbia/Asheville [N.C.] School) led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) chipped in 14 points while Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW, Australia) added his second collegiate double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game wasn't statistically over until the clock read 0:00.

ALMOST ONE FOR THE BOOKS: A win over No. 2 East Bay would have been CSUMB's biggest win ever in terms of ranked opponents. The highest ranked opponent ever defeated by CSUMB was then No. 7 Chico State in a 64–61 win on Jan. 22, 2022.

TENGAN UP TO 14TH ON SEASON SCORING LIST: Jaden Tengan's 14 points Thursday against Cal State East Bay moved him up to No. 14 on the Otter single-season scoring list with 440 points. He needs 14 points to pass Steve Monreal (2009) for a spot in the Top 10.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: Led by a career-high three blocks from junior Ashton Reese, the Otters swatted a season-high seven shots Thursday versus Cal State East Bay. That ranks No. 11 on the Otter list for blocks in a game.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIGITS: Once again, at least three Otters scored in double digits Thursday against Cal State East Bay. This time, the honors went to: Miki Gacic (18), Jaden Tengan (14) and Chol Deng (12). It marked the 27th consecutive game in which at least three Otters scored in double figures.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Miki Gacic 18; REBOUNDS: Chol Deng 11; ASSISTS: Michael Mora 2; BLOCKS: Ashton Reese 3; STEALS: Chol Deng/Jaden Tengan 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB concludes the home portion of their 2025-26 schedule when they host San Francisco State Saturday. They'll tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
