SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer has officially entered the national spotlight, earning the No. 15 ranking in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.
The national recognition comes on the heels of an impressive stretch for the Otters, who have won five consecutive matches and are unbeaten in their last six (5-0-1). Under head coach
Graeme Jaap, Monterey Bay has compiled a 9-2-3 overall record, highlighted by two impressive results against nationally ranked top-10 opponents.
The Otters made one of their biggest statements of the season Saturday, traveling to San Bernardino and knocking off then-No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino, 2-1, at Premier Field.
Damon Smith, who was just named the CCAA Defensive Player of the Week, opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before
Mason Ward doubled the advantage just seven minutes later, giving Monterey Bay a commanding 2-0 first-half lead. The Otters' defense was equally impressive, holding the nationally ranked Coyotes without a shot through the opening 45 minutes.
Despite conceding a second-half goal, CSUMB held firm to secure the road victory, handing San Bernardino just its second loss of the season.
The performance followed another impressive result against the nation's elite earlier in the campaign, when Monterey Bay battled then-No. 1 Cal State LA to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 20 at Cardinale Stadium.
Those two results have highlighted the Otters' ability to compete with some of the best programs in NCAA Division II, helping propel Monterey Bay into the national rankings.
Since battling Cal Poly Pomona to a 3-3 draw on Sept. 27, CSUMB has put together a remarkable six-match unbeaten streak, including five consecutive victories over Cal State Dominguez Hills, UC Merced, Chico State, Fresno Pacific and Cal State San Bernardino.
During that stretch, the Otters have outscored their opponents 15-5, recording three consecutive shutouts against Dominguez Hills, UC Merced and Chico State.
The recent surge has featured contributions throughout the lineup, with Ward leading the Otters with six goals, while
Philip Wolny has continued to provide an offensive spark.
Defensively,
Jerry Godfryd has helped solidify the back line, recording three consecutive shutouts during the winning streak.
Monterey Bay's rise also reflects the strength of the CCAA, which features two nationally ranked teams in the latest poll. Cal State LA retained the No. 1 ranking, while Cal State San Bernardino checked in at No. 20 following its loss to the Otters.
In addition to its national ranking, CSUMB earned the No. 3 spot in the United Soccer Coaches West Region rankings, trailing only Cal State LA and Seattle Pacific.
With its first national ranking of the season and momentum continuing to build, Monterey Bay enters the final stretch of the regular season looking to strengthen its position in the CCAA standings and postseason picture.
The No. 15 Otters return to Cardinale Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 22, to host Cal Poly Humboldt at 7 p.m.
