Otters Take Down No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino on the Road for Fifth Straight Win

CSUMB earns second result against a top-10 opponent this season

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer continued its impressive run Saturday afternoon, earning a statement 2-1 road victory over No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino at Premier Field to extend its winning streak to five consecutive matches.

The victory improved the Otters to 9-2-3 overall and 5-1-3 in CCAA play, marking their sixth consecutive match without a loss. CSUMB is now 5-0-1 over its last six contests and has earned a result in eight of its last nine matches.

Saturday's victory also marked Monterey Bay's second result against a nationally ranked top-10 opponent this season. The Otters previously battled then-No. 1 Cal State LA to a scoreless draw on Sept. 20, despite playing the majority of the contest with 10 men. This time, CSUMB went on the road and handed the ninth-ranked Coyotes just their second loss of the season.

Monterey Bay wasted little time establishing itself against one of the nation's top teams, controlling the opening half and building a two-goal advantage before the break.

Damon Smith opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finding the back of the net at 21:38 off an assist from Josh Moll. The goal was Smith's first of the season and gave the Otters an early advantage.

Just over seven minutes later, Mason Ward doubled the lead with his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign. Philip Wolny provided the assist as Ward finished at 28:41, putting CSUMB ahead 2-0.

The Otters' first-half performance was especially impressive defensively, holding the nationally ranked Coyotes without a single shot through the opening 45 minutes. CSUMB registered seven shots, including six on goal, while taking a commanding two-goal advantage into halftime.

CSUSB increased its offensive pressure in the second half and cut the deficit to one in the 66th minute on a goal from Rafa Fonseca. However, the Otters remained composed over the final 24 minutes to secure one of their biggest victories of the season.

Goalkeeper Jerry Godfryd played all 90 minutes as the Otter defense limited the Coyotes to eight total shots, including three on target. Angad Bains and Smith also went the distance, anchoring a defensive effort that helped preserve the road victory.

CSUMB finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Wolny led the Otter attack with four shots, including two on frame, while Ward added two attempts.

The victory continues a remarkable stretch for CSUMB, which has now won five straight matches after defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills, UC Merced, Chico State, Fresno Pacific and No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino.

During the six-match unbeaten streak, the Otters have outscored their opponents 15-5, including three consecutive shutouts against Cal State Dominguez Hills, UC Merced and Chico State.

More importantly, Saturday's result demonstrated CSUMB's ability to compete with the nation's elite. After earning a draw against the top-ranked Golden Eagles earlier this season, the Otters added a road victory over another top-10 opponent, further strengthening their position in the CCAA and West Region standings.

The Otters return home for two matches at Cardinale Stadium, facing Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday, Oct. 22, and then Cal State East Bay on Sunday, Oct. 25.
