Peterson Pounds 26 Kills To Tame Wildcats

Peterson’s 26 kills are one off the Otter record in 4-set win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) just missed breaking the Otter record for kills in a 4-set match, but the 26 she put down were enough to lift Cal State Monterey Bay to a 25–23, 25–20, 17–25, 25–21 win over visiting Chico State Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Her 26 kills were a career high and one off the school record of 27 first set by Jessica Malcolm in 2013 and matched by Jenna Tobin in a win over Hawaii-Hilo in 2019. They are the fifth-most by an Otter in all matches.

Peterson got off to a sizzling start with 10 kills in CSUMB's 25–23 first-set win. She helped the Otters lead the whole way, although a late 5-point run got Chico close before Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) stuffed Cassandra Nall to end it.

The second set was nip-and-tuck until a kill and another solo block by Thorne broke a 16–16 tie. The Otters gently pulled away from there, with Peterson's 16th kill officially giving them a 2–0 lead in the match.

Chico blazed to an 8–1 lead to begin the third set and never let the Otters get close to make the home crowd a little anxious. But a pair of Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) kills helped CSUMB to its own 8–1 lead to open the fourth set, and Chico never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Thorne led the net defense with five and four blocks respectively. Maya Giannini (Palma HS) and Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) anchored a strong backline with career highs of 19 and 18 digs apiece.

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After Chico fought its way back into the match with a win in the third set, a Lilly Bandle kill capped an 8–1 opening salvo from CSUMB in the fourth set to reestablish Otter control.

RARIFIED AIR FOR PETERSON, CCAA EDITION… Malia Peterson's 26 kills in Friday's win over Chico State were the most by any CCAA player in a 4-set match in 2026. Only Fuka Kilkuchi's 27 in a 5-setter for Menlo College beat that this season.

RARIFIED AIR FOR PETERSON, OTTER EDITION… Only five players in Otter history — Julia Ashen, Rheann Fall, Jessica Malcolm, Jenna Tobin and Jackie Wahl — have ever put down more kills in a match than Malia Peterson's 26 Friday against Chico State. For those who are curious, Fall owns the Otter record with 33 in a 5-set win over Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 15, 2010.

PETERSON EYES 600-KILL CLUB… What once seemed unreachable now appears well within reach as Malia Peterson moved up to No. 14 on the Otter career kills list with 570. She is looking to become just the 13th player in program history to reach 600 kills.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON: Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continue to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts. In Friday's win over Chico State, Bandle earned a 5–4 edge overall while Thorne claimed the only two solo blocks. Bandle upped her lead in the block assist race to 119–116. On the total blocks list, Bandle also increased her lead, 150–147. Thorne pulled ahead of Bandle on the block solos list, 33–31

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 27.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 26; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle 5; ACES: Gia Hoffman 2; DIGS: Maya Giannini 19.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-match homestand Saturday when they host Stanislaus State for a 5 p.m. first serve.
